Chinese Musicals “Kunlun Myth” and “Nasirdin Afandi”
Musical China Theatre Troupe performed Kunlun Myth wraps its U.S. début with a final performance at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Thursday, September 17, 2015. This large-scale Chinese musical is followed by Nasirdin Afandi, story of perseverance, benevolence, and absolution. Intended for all audiences, this family friendly tale incorporates traditional Xinjiang elements and music. The production includes Chinese and Persian cultural influences that hold true to China’s Xinjiang region, Central Asia and South Asia.
Based on a Chinese folktale, Nasirdin Afandi is about a young boy named Kaisaer, from Xinjiang. Afandi is an old wise man revered by many that Kaisaer badly wants to become. Kaisaer’s scheming landlord makes use of him to gain the trust of the people by getting him to impersonate Afandi, which ultimately results in the real Afandi taking Kaisaer under his wing.
